Unpack your cold weather clothes.

October 5th, 2012

Even by the end of August we’d had some snow around the peaks of Chamonix. In fact, not even the high peaks. It snowed down to 1800m in Les Houches, at the top of Le Prarion for the weekend of the Ultra Trail. As ever, early season/late sumer snow didn’t last long but it was the turning point for the start of the cooler evenings.

Chamonix has been hit fairly hard by the recent avalanche in Manaslu where numerous people lost their lives including some local mountain guides. If you live here and have a profession in the mountains, it’s pretty hard not to have known them in some certain capacity. Our thoughts go out to their families at this time

So, all the lifts are planning to do their usual ‘waiting until the last minute before the crowds arrive’ before opening, so the first day for Flégère, Balme and Brévent is the 22nd December. There’s limited opening at the Grands Montets from mid November as per usual – snow cover dependant.

Through in Courmayeur, finally one of the more difficult tracks to ski is being widened (thankfully for some!) by digging into the hillside getting rid of an icy, two ski wide track.

Powderama is being assisted for the season 2012/13 by Patagonia clothing and K2 for skis.
