Chamonix Olympic History

December 8th, 2013

On January 25th it will be 90 years since Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympics. Originally known as the Semaine Internationale des Sports d’Hiver (International Winter Sports Week) it was a rather different event from the Sochi games which has taken a lead from the X-Games of late.

There was no alpine skiing – only jumping, cross country and a nordic combined event – and at least on the day Team GB didn’t have a great event. It was only in 2006 that the IOC upgraded the men’s curling event from a demonstration event to official status.

You can still see the bobsleigh track (hidden in the trees in Pelerins d’en Haut just above the Auberge de Jeunesse) and the ski jump above Les Bossons.
